What is stress?

But what exactly is stress? And what is anxiety? Stress is the reaction we, or our body, feel when there has been some type of change that we have to come to terms with, or respond to, either physically, mentally or emotionally. It may occur when we compare the image of ourselves to the reality of ourselves, opposing forces are created, and our mind tries to match the created image with the current situation. Stress can be the result of a situation or thought that creates feelings of frustration, anxiety, nervousness or anger. Anxiety is the feeling of fear, unease, and worry.

The source of these symptoms is not always known and maybe with present or absence of psychological.

Stress is caused by an existing stress-causing factor termed a 'stressor'. Dealing with a change of job, caring for an ill loved one, packing for a family holiday or planning a friends birthday celebration are all potential sources of stress. Factors which may not normally cause concern can become overwhelming when a person is experiencing extended periods of stress or anxiety. We're all individuals and we have our own unique way of coping and stress management. To remain on top of life we all need to find effective natural stress management techniques and natural anxiety treatment, without using medication.

Life crises

Research has proven that the experiences we encounter over the years are likely to cause diseases which would not manifest until later on in life if we do not find effective ways to relieve stress. Research into the impact of major life stresses is well established and recommends the development of effective stress management strategies.

  • The death of a spouse or a loved one causes the highest level of stress, followed by divorce and marital separation.
  • The conflicts intertwined with relationships with people close cause the most ongoing stress.

Social networks disintegration

Relationships have been proven to be one of the more important aspects of our human life, especially to our psychological and physical well-being. Thus if someone who you truly cherish, leaves or passes away, your social network begins to disintegrate, as we feel loneliness take over our lives. This is because as humans, we need the warmth and love that relationships bring to us.

Occupational stress

As humans, most of our time in life is spent working as compared to any other activity. Occupational stress is a result of a factor or combinations of factors at work. It interacts with the worker to disrupt their psychological or physical wellbeing. It can be caused by a number of factors including:

  • Work overload, coming from an overload of what the worker is expected to do. It may also be the ambiguity of the task required of the worker.
  • Stimulus under load happens when there are not enough tasks for the worker to undertake. It can cause job dissatisfaction, post-traumatic stress syndrome, an increase in the level of cholesterol, increased heart rate, excessive smoking which could lead to an increased risk of having heart diseases.

Drugs can worsen symptoms of stress

Some medications which can exasperate stress symptoms include:

  • some inhaler medicines used to treat asthma
  • Thyroid drugs
  • some diet pills
  • some cold remedies

Other substances that can cause or make symptoms of stress and anxiety worse include caffeine, cocaine, alcohol and tobacco products.

What are the consequences of not seeking treatment for stress?

  • Diseases - stress has been the consequence for 50-80% of diseases.
  • Insomnia - the inability to fall asleep.
  • Hypertension - high blood pressure, which could lead to lethal complications.
  • Ageing - research has proven that people age faster when they experience more stress.
