Signs of lactose intolerance
Symptoms of lactose intolerance occur due to the body not having enough lactase to break down the lactose in the small intestine and so it travels to the colon where it is fermented by the natural bacteria present in the colon resulting in:
- gas
- bloating
- distension
- abdominal pain or discomfort
- diarrhoea
Lactose intolerance test
The calcium in milk and milk products provides a lot of our daily calcium requirements. It is recommended to keep our bones and teeth strong as well as maintain healthy nerves and muscle tissue that we consume the following amounts of calcium each day -
- 210-270 mg babies 0 to 12 months
- 500-1300 mg children 1 to 18 years
- 1000 mg for men and women,
- 1300 mg for post-menopausal women,
- 1100 mg for pregnant women and
- 1120 mg for breastfeeding women
Before removing all milk and associated products from your diet find out conclusively if you are lactose intolerant with a lactose intolerance test. Find out more about lactose intolerance testing .
