What is insomnia?
Insomnia is the inability to fall asleep or stay asleep, resulting in the individual waking up feeling unrested. Insomnia is experienced by most people at some time in their lives. Insomnia is a symptom, not a disease in itself, often referred to as a sleep disorder.
Insomnia symptoms
Symptoms of insomnia can be varied but can include the following:
- difficulty falling asleep
- waking during the night
- experiencing difficulty going back to sleep upon waking
- waking early
- feeling unrested when waking
- feeling sleepy during the day
- irritability
- memory problems
Psychological Factors for insomnia
Primary insomnia is chronic insomnia that occurs on most nights and for a month or more. Secondary insomnia is usually transient or intermittent and is the symptom or a side effect of an emotional, psychological or medical condition. Depression, either concurrent or in the past, is a common factor that is likely to cause or exacerbate sleep problems. Anxiety and stress can often keep us up at night, which may become a problem if insomnia does not resolve and begins to affect other areas of life.
Counselling can significantly help with emotionally or psychologically driven insomnia, by providing support to identify stress and shift existing conditions like anxiety and depression. A counsellor can also provide tips to change underlying behaviours and habits that are contributing to the cycle of poor sleep. By improving the quality of sleep, the mind and body are more rested and better equipped to deal with an inevitably hectic schedule and unplanned stressful events.

There are many things you can do tonight to help get a good nights sleep.
- reduce your caffeine intake - that includes coffee, black and green tea, cola and energy drinks.

- do something relaxing at the end of your day, unwind.
